ASHIMA: A Cinematic Journey of Determination and Growth + Q&A with Kenji Tsukamoto

HAAPIFEST is thrilled to announce the screening of the captivating documentary ASHIMA on June 9, 2024, at DoubleTree by Hilton, 10609 Westpark Dr, Houston, TX 77042. The event will run from 12 PM to 3 PM, offering attendees a unique glimpse into the life of a young rock climbing prodigy.

About the Film

ASHIMA follows the extraordinary journey of Ashima Shiraishi, a young girl who has quickly risen to the top ranks of the rock climbing world. Despite being born and raised in the sprawling metropolis of New York City, Ashima’s universe is surprisingly narrow, revolving around her intense training and close-knit family. Her father, Poppo, who abandoned his career as an avant-garde performer and Butoh dancer, has dedicated himself to training Ashima, fostering a complex and powerful bond between them.

The documentary captures Ashima at the age of 13 as she travels to South Africa with her father to confront her most formidable challenge yet: climbing a V14 boulder problem. This achievement would make her only the second female athlete to conquer such a feat. The film’s intimate and cinematic approach delves deep into the nuances of their relationship, exploring the intricate balance between parental guidance and a child’s growing independence.
